Selenium is an essential trace element necessary for the formation of the antioxidant enzyme Glutathione perioxidase (Glutathione peroxidase), an important enzyme with antioxidant properties that stops the oxidation of fats, especially bad (LDL) cholesterol.
Selenium is also bound to the sulfur amino acid methionine (methionine) in a natural form as found in the diet. Selenium is incorporated into the body in a large number of vital proteins called selenoproteins.
Selenoproteins can reduce the risk of prostate cancer because they are involved in the production of the hormone testosterone, which is an important regulator of both normal and abnormal growth. These proteins also help regulate thyroid function and play an important role in the immune system. Twenty-five such proteins have been identified to date.
These include: i) peroxidases which have important anti-inflammatory properties and protect cell membranes from free radicals ii) deiodinases which are involved in the production of the active form of thyroid hormone and active thyroid hormone proteins involved in the creation and repair of DNA. Selenium reduces the chance of heart attacks and strokes thanks to its mainly preventive capabilities.
Its strong antioxidant property in synergy with vitamin E strengthens the thyroid, pancreas, liver and immune system. It is especially useful for athletes as it protects against muscle problems caused by free radicals that occur after intense exercise.
