Vitamin C

Η vitamin C Ascorbic acid is a water-soluble vitamin and is one of the best known antioxidants. Humans, unlike most mammals, do not have the ability to synthesize vitamin C, which is why it is essential to get it from food.
Vitamin C is responsible for many functions in the human body such as:

  • collagen synthesis
  • tissue development and repair and wound healing
  • the production of antibodies and the stimulation of white blood cells
  • the absorption of iron and its necessary accumulation in the bone marrow
  • the spleen and liver
  • neutralization of free radicals, which are the basis of serious diseases including cancer and heart disease.
  • normal psychological function and stress

Η vitamin C found mainly in fruits and vegetables such as peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, brussels sprouts, garlic, cabbage, strawberries, kiwi, orange, lemon, grapefruit and pineapple. Also herbs such as thyme, celery and basil are good sources of vitamin C.

In dietary supplements vitamin C is available in non-acidic form and more absorbable, the so-called Ester-C where it remains in the bloodstream longer than Vitamin C.
The dosage varies according to age and need. Do not exceed the amount of vitamin C intake as it can cause gastrointestinal disorders.
